The manner with which his skates glide across the ice: that scrape, somehow inviting, and then! That momentary pause when he lifts - so thrilling, so electrifying - the only sound is the gasp of the viewer. And his body swirls, almost liquid, with an elfin sheen; he tantalises the audience with an unspoken control. As his back arches (in a way seductive, yet beautifully innocent too; the curve of reeds against a breeze, by the riverbank, jewelled with dew), you know he knows that this performance is beautiful.
